So the question is not steel versus aluminum. It is how far your house sits from open water, and what your specific warranty document says about it. 

Portland makes this concrete. A house off Riverside Street is several miles from open saltwater and Galvalume steel is a sound, economical choice. Picture the barn. Steel panels fastened to open purlins, no deck, no underlayment, no insulation, no ceiling below. Rain hits bare metal with an air cavity behind it, which is more or less how you would build a drum on purpose. 

Your house is the opposite. Panels go over a solid plywood or board deck, on top of synthetic underlayment, above an insulated attic, under a finished ceiling. Four layers of mass and trapped air sit between the weather and your bedroom. That assembly, not the metal, determines what you hear. 

One real exception. A cathedral ceiling or a finished attic room has no air buffer above it, so it transmits more sound than a standard vented attic. Corrugated panels are screwed through the face and sealed with rubber washers that degrade over years of freeze-thaw cycling, which is why corrugated belongs on outbuildings rather than houses. 

Are roofing contractors licensed in Maine? 

No. Maine does not license general contractors or roofers at the state level. A licensing bill, LD 1226, passed both chambers in 2025 but died on adjournment in April 2026, so it is not law. Verify insurance, references, and a written contract yourself. 

Does a metal roof lower energy bills in Maine? 

Modestly at best. Reflective roofing was developed for cooling-dominated climates, and in a heating climate it carries a small winter penalty that summer savings usually offset. Once snow covers the roof, its color stops mattering entirely. Treat energy savings as a minor bonus here. 

Can you install a metal roof over existing shingles? 

Often yes, and it saves the cost of tear-off and disposal. The existing deck has to be sound, the number of layers has to comply with local rules, and the assembly needs correct ventilation so moisture is not trapped between the old and new roofing. A contractor should inspect the deck and attic before committing to it.
